LCL or FCL: Compare the Whole Shipment Before Choosing

Compare LCL and FCL using the same goods, packing information and South African handover point, with every open cost kept visible.

LCL/FCL Whole-Shipment Comparison

One quotation gives a container price. Another lists an LCL freight amount with several local charges. A South African buyer needs both proposals to describe the same movement before deciding which offers the better fit.

Start with the goods you have agreed to buy, the final packing information and the handover point you need. Use the LCL/FCL comparison worksheet to keep costs, timing and receiving arrangements together.

Understand the container service being offered

LCL, or less-than-container load, shares container space among different shippers. The service includes bringing shipments together and separating them again at destination. FCL, or full-container load, reserves a container for one shipper, including when some space remains unused. Maersk explains these distinctions in its FCL and LCL guide.

Keep your purchase quantity fixed while comparing the services. If filling a container would require buying additional stock, record that as a separate purchasing decision. Its funding and storage requirements belong beside the freight proposal.

Ask the provider to confirm suitable equipment, packing assumptions and cargo acceptance. Describe fragile surfaces, heavy packages, unusual dimensions or stacking limits that may affect the arrangement.

Separate supplier consolidation from LCL

Collecting goods from several of your suppliers describes an origin-handling arrangement. Those goods could then move under different ocean services, depending on the agreed plan.

For example, Flexport's buyer consolidation service describes combining suppliers' goods into full containers. The number of suppliers therefore does not, by itself, identify the ocean service.

In your enquiry, state both needs separately: which supplier orders must be received together, and which transport options you want compared. Confirm the receiving, checking, packing and dispatch work included before treating them as part of a freight price.

Fix the same start and finish

Give both proposals the same supplier collection assumptions or China receiving point. Specify the same South African delivery or collection address. Record the cartons, pallets, dimensions and weights used for each quotation.

A terminal-to-terminal figure and a proposal ending at your warehouse cover different work. Add the remaining transport and handover requirements before comparing their totals. Check who arranges those stages and which amounts are still estimates.

Record the quotation date, currency, validity and product details. Ask what change would require a revised proposal, such as new packing measurements or a different receiving address.

Build the complete cost comparison

Ask the provider to identify the applicable items below. This is a quote-review checklist; a particular service may combine some items, exclude them or use different labels.

Cost groupWhat to establish for both proposals
China origin workSupplier collection, receiving, agreed checks, packing and origin handling
Main ocean movementService, equipment or shipment basis, and calculation assumptions
South African destination workApplicable handling, release and delivery or collection arrangements
Import and additional requirementsCustoms arrangement, duties, import VAT and any product-specific work requiring confirmation
Conditional itemsStorage or waiting, extra handling, unloading and container-return arrangements where relevant

Use a status beside each amount: confirmed, estimate, excluded or unknown. An excluded or unknown item still needs to be addressed; it contributes no reliable number to a complete total yet.

Flexport's LCL/FCL comparison explains that the price break-even point varies with the origin and ocean freight market. Use the current proposals for your goods rather than a fixed volume threshold from a general guide.

Check the timing and receiving work

Request the stages covered by each estimated date. Identify the start event, the planned service and the stages remaining after arrival. For LCL, ask how consolidation and destination separation appear in the plan. For FCL, confirm the delivery, unloading and container-return arrangements relevant to the proposal.

Check the receiving site before approving either option. Describe its access, booking requirements, available unloading arrangement and the person who can receive the goods. Request the applicable waiting or storage conditions in writing.

Compare the complete plan to the date your business needs stock available. A general statement that one service is faster cannot settle whether the proposed movement fits your order.

Resolve missing scope before selecting

Consider this fictional quotation review: a wholesaler receives an FCL proposal ending at a named terminal and an LCL proposal including delivery to its Gauteng premises. The first comparison is incomplete because the endpoints differ.

The buyer requests the remaining FCL delivery and receiving arrangements, then checks which costs are confirmed for both options. The buyer also asks how each plan reaches the same required handover. This creates a usable comparison without inventing a freight rate or assuming the lowest initial figure wins.

Record the selected service, goods covered, quotation version and outstanding conditions. Set a review trigger for changes to the packing, readiness, service or destination.

To discuss an LCL/FCL comparison with Jeton Express, share the final packing details and the two scopes you want reviewed. Include the same South African handover point and identify any missing charges or receiving requirements. The written proposal confirms the agreed service and responsibilities.

Continue with sea freight, consolidation or prepare an enquiry.

How to use the table

  • Keep the purchase quantity unchanged while comparing services. Record any proposal to buy more stock as a separate buying decision.
  • State supplier consolidation requirements separately from the proposed ocean service. Several suppliers do not automatically mean LCL.
  • If one quotation ends at a terminal and another ends at your premises, request the missing stages before treating the totals as comparable.
  • Keep quote dates, evidence dates and validity visible. Ask what changes require a revised proposal.
  • A confirmed subtotal is a partial figure until all required work is addressed. Keep each missing item's owner and next review date beside it.
  • For each timing estimate, record its start event and final handover point. Confirm the receiving and equipment-return work that applies to the selected service.
